Overview
The Youth Initiative Program is a 4-workshop program that is delivered over 8 weeks.
The initial workshop series is being delivered in July/August 2021.
The second series of four workshops will be delivered in partnership with FBOs.
Each FBO partner in the OEF program must nominate 1 or youth from their community to represent the FBO in the program.
The program format includes:
An initial 3 session introduction
All participants complete a pre-workshop survey at the start of a new program. This gives a baseline of attitudes and knowledge before the workshops.

Participants must sign in for each workshop and confirm that they will complete the evaluation survey after the workshop in order to get paid for their attendance and participation
Workshops are then delivered with participants signing in at the start and completing the evaluation survey for the specific workshop session.
Workshop 1:
Healthy Relationships and Effective Communication
Participants will discuss how to employ effective communication strategies with friends, family, jobs, romantic relationships, and with oneself. Will discuss consent, self-expression.
Discussion will include:
- Communication strategies and the benefits of healthy communication and relationships
- Communication with partner about setting healthy physical boundaries
- Mental, emotional, and physical boundaries
- The importance of setting boundaries
- How to have conversations about boundaries
- Seeking and giving consent
- Gender identity and sexual orientation

Workshop 2:
Mental Health, Nutrition, and Wellness
In this workshop young participants will learn and practice the skill of mindful decision making as it relates to their personal self-care and future endeavors.
Discussion will include:
- Self-care as necessary primary focus
- Self-esteem and positive communication with self
- Body image
- Nutrition
- Physical activity
- Sleep

Workshop 3:
Contraceptives, STI/HIV Risk Reduction and Prevention
In this workshop young participants will learn pregnancy prevention methods and discuss the importance of condom use.
Discussion will include:
- Pregnancy prevention
- Birth Control (hormonal, non-hormonal and LARCs)
- Emergency contraception
- Condoms (internal and external)
- Dental dams
- Finger cots
- HIV and AIDS
- What they are?
- Transmission modes and bodily fluids
- Biomedical interventions
- PrEP
- PEP
- TasP (Treatment as Prevention)
- The most common STIs in young men and women
- What can happen if an STI is left untreated
- How to avoid acquiring HIV and STIs
- Substance use and decision making

Workshop 4:
Job, Careers, and Opportunities
This workshop will discuss the importance of your education as it relates to different career paths youth are interested in exploring. It will also cover how “Self Esteem” can impact learning, career success and overall health.
Discussion will include:
- Making the distinction between a job, a career, a passion, and a calling
- Looking at internship opportunities, and summer jobs to enhance career exposure
- SMART goals
- Exposing youth to mentors who can help build self-confidence via exposure to varying career paths (trade schools, colleges, etc.)
- Historically Black Colleges and Universities
- HIV prevention and safer sex practices on college campuses.
- Health services that the institutions provide in terms of HIV, STI, Hep C testing
